Started working at the Judicial Branch in 1975 as a member of the Judicial Investigation Organism (OIJ, Organismo de Investigación Judicial) until 1977.
In 1985, the Supreme Judicial Court designated him as a Judge of the First Superior Criminal Court from San José ("Tribunal Superior Primero Penal de San José"). He worked there up to the first semester of 1986, when he was pointed as Chief of the Public Ministry from 1986 to 1989.
Between 1986 and 1987 he participated in Latin American Seminars related to the Mixed Criminal Modern Process celebrated in Dominican Republic and Ecuador, sponsored by The Latin American Institute to Prevent Offence and to Treat the Offender.
From 1990 to 1994 he was the Vice-Minister of Government and Justice within the Executive Power.
He worked as Vice-Minister of Industrial Economy and Commerce, and Vice-Minister of Government and Justice from 1998 to 2002.
Eduardo Araya has extensive teaching experience as a University Professor in the areas of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure.
He is a litigation lawyer, specialized in Criminal, Migratory, and Criminal-Constitutional Law.
